Summer Programs at the Nature Preserve

The Pember is opening the historic Porter Schoolhouse (Pember’s Nature Center) every Sunday from June 3 through October 7 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Beth Moser-Duquette will be presenting programs each week with some including a craft project. There is no specific start time. Participants can show up at their convenience as long as it’s not 30 minutes before the nature center closes. Visitors can also pop in to create a walking stick, grab a trail map or rest from a hike. There will also be a featured program once a month on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The Schoolhouse is located about 6937 NY 22 in Hebron with the sign reading “Hebron Nature Preserve.”

Sunday, June 10 – 11:00am-3:00pm – Nature Journaling

We have all heard of a diary; a Nature Journal is similar. We will make a diary of what we have seen, heard, or encountered while enjoying the outdoors at the Preserve. Journaling is a meditative art form that not only records words but can include a small watercolor sketch. There will be journaling with scraps of paper with a brief focus of the origin of paper and how it’s made.

Sunday, June 17 – 11:00am-3:00pm – Intro. to Ornithology

Birds in flight; We will learn how to identify birds by the shape of the wings, the differences in beaks, and tails and talons. We will discuss the changes birds have made to adapt to their environment. Take a list of birds on a scavenger hunt on your hike as you search for birds in trees and in flight.

Saturday, June 23 – 10:00am-12:00pm – Bird Hike

Who’s Nesting? Birds migrate during many months of the calendar year. Some will fly North to nest since it’s in their DNA to return where they began. Note the wonderful sounds when you stroll along the paths while looking high and low for nests. You may be surprised and hear some chirping! Before heading out on the trails, bird signs will be discussed. This will be followed by a short project of nest making using feathers and yarn.

Sunday, June 24 – 11:00am-12:00pm – Mosses, Fungi and Lichens

What lives at the Pember Nature Preserve among the critters? Many celebrate these little creatures in the woods and in our gardens. Come be creative and make a Fairy House for your garden. Before we begin, there will be an introduction to lichens, mosses, twigs and mushrooms to make your creative imagination open. If you can bring bark from down or dead trees and flowers.

More programs to follow July-Oct.
