Ancient Civilizations

A new type of after-school discovery program is coming this fall. Culture meets Natural History at the Pember. We’ll be studying ancient civilizations and creating an interactive notebook for each participant. We start at 3:30pm to 4:30pm. Here’s our timeline:

9/20 – Ancient Mesopotamia

10/4 – Ancient Egypt

10/18 – Ancient India

11/1 – Ancient China

11/15 – Ancient Greece

11/29 – Ancient Rome

12/13 – Ancient America

This class will be for 1st-3rd graders. Older children can attend but might be bored with the material. Registration will be necessary by September 12. A “fuzzy buddy” award will be given to each participant who attends a program. Our after-school program is no cost.

Here’a a sneak peak of the cover page to our interactive notebook. More photos might be forthcoming as I work through the programs.

Spring Break Pics

Although our class size was small, we had fun! We learned and we crafted.

The Nature Walk enlightened us with frog egs and sounds, deer tracks, funny fungus, coyote scat, and Canada geese nesting & honking with the signs of spring all around us. We spent 1.5 hours walking and investigating the trails off South Grimes Hill Road of the Nature Preserve.

Our reptile program started with a half hour video on reptiles. How interesting! Then we got down to business personalizing our snakes.

The nature inspired art program proved to be just fun. We created beautiful butterflies. The photo cube was painted and adorned with seashells. We ran out of time, so participants took home shells to finish their cubes.

Here are some photos. Sorry we missed you.

6 Silent but Deadly Animals

At today’s after-school program, our students learned about some stealthy animals that were deadly by jaws, claws or poison. In fact, most already guessed at what animals would fit in this category. They learned about the Poison Dart Frog, Caiman, Leopard, Great Horned Owl, Tarantula, and Puffed Adder. They were only stumped by a few. Following the discussion, each created their own Dart Frogs. Here they are!

Festival of Wreaths
